Ver Des – I Keep Dreaming

At the age of 8, Ver Des (Ella Herrera) knew what she wanted to do; be a singer and songwriter. It wasn’t until 10 years later; she decided to follow her heart. Dropping out of college (medical school), she set to work creating an E.P. that will hopefully (if we here at IMR have anything to do with it) garner her the praise and appreciation she deserves. Just a guitar and voice, the I Keep Dreaming EP features 6 songs, lyrically heartbreaking and beautiful. Just released in May of this year, this young singer/songwriter out of Florida has a promising career ahead of her. Ver Des’s vocals are raw, unpolished and perfect. With just the right range and emotions, her songs come to life and for a moment you a spellbound by the music that is playing and swirling around and buzzing in your ears.

“I want to rip my lungs out so I can’t breathe
I want to fall asleep in the deepest of dreams
Meet myself for the first time and loose myself for the third
Then maybe when I wake up I’ll be where I deserve.”

What is so wonderful about Ver Des is her ability to convey the emotions she sings about. Most of the songs are about love, relationships (not just between two people, inner relationships with herself as well) and heartbreak. Even adultery isn’t off topic:

As the sun rises
you rush out
of the house
its time for you to go
back home to you’re loving spouse.

Because these songs were recorded in her bedroom (mostly all in one take) you get a very intimate, “dear diary” sort of feel. It’s as if we are getting a glimpse into the inner workings of a singer/songwriter during their process. She leaves the listener hanging on every word; anticipating what she is going to reveal to us next.

It’s an honor and privilege to be allowed a peek into this young Floridian’s beginning of a long (and hopefully successful) journey in creating music. It’s hard to imagine I Keep Dreaming being made in a studio; much like when you hear a band’s favorite song in a demo.  The echo of her voice, the finger slides on the fret board are all little quirks that add character to I Keep Dreaming. The raw and realness of it is charming, enchanting and about 15 other adjectives that mean wonderful. If you are in Florida and have the chance to see her perform, please do yourself a favor and do so. For the rest, take a listen, and support this wonderful young talent.
