Peter Terry and The City Profits are definitely a force to be reckoned with, many a band have triumphed with the swaggering attitude which they also have acquired. The most notable example of this would be Maroon 5, (the earlier albums, NOT ‘Move Like Jagger’) where they create a certain twang in their vocals to create a tongue in cheek lyrical effect. Well written, half anthemic lyrics are a stamp of Peter Terry and work incredibly well with the slight folk feel to I AM JACKSON which helps give it extra kudos for originality and uniqueness.
The first song on the debut album is ‘Stripper Song’ a racy folkish song powered by the double bass & cello with an amazingly catchy, fiery riff which carries the song through as well as brilliantly simple lyrics making the song just impossibly addictive to listen to. The album then beautifully begins the second song without any gaps or breaks, which in my eyes helps any album to become ethereal and more accessible to anyone listening to it.
The second song ‘Burning Bed’ brings the tone of the album down far too quickly in my opinion but, to their merit is a wonderfully crafted song which has lovely melodic lyrics which flow again alongside the graciousness of the cello and double bass.
‘Hey’ is another brilliant song, and perfectly showcases the brilliance of guitar and double bass/cello together in harmony, and how effective they are. Even with repetitive lyrics this song is never a bore because of the instruments which work unbelievably well together.
‘Elizabeth Shue’ is the most definite example of my earlier point about Maroon 5, the verses are sung slowly but very melodically whilst paralleling the cello/double bass combo. The drums are again played in a great minimalist style which has been fine tuned because it would be so easy fro the drums to drown out the the other instruments when working with a folkish, soft album.
There is no need for me to go through any more of the songs on this finely crafted piece of music artwork because hopefully you can get an idea from what I have already said about the album; and that shall persuade you to buy/download it because it works so well and is a piece of music that no one could ever hate.
