Get ready for an emotional journey at sea from an independent folk-nautical-rock artist named Paul Starling out of Thousand Oaks, California. Paul Starling sings songs about a love of the sea and romance. This latest tormented journey begins with the third CD Shipwrecked Commotion which was released on June 26, 2012 featuring twelve “heart wrenching” tracks.
The tormented journey begins with heartache in the first track “Visions of Drowning.” This track features soulful vocals and a light melodic retro folk-rock sound. This track is an agonizing tale about a man who becomes distraught over his relationship ending. The man was “blindsided” by his former girlfriend. Meanwhile, heartache turns into happiness in the second track “Dress Me in Bowties.” This track features soulful vocals and a more “rockabilly” folk sound. This track is a joyful tale about a man who is attracted to a beautiful woman. So, he must dress nicer in order to impress the beautiful woman.
Next, a deep sadness lingers in the fourth track “All the Good Looking Girls Are Dead.” This track features soulful, but “brooding” vocals and a slow melodic retro folk-rock sound. This track is a heartbreaking tale about a lonely man who feels like an “outcast” because all of the attractive young girls are not paying any attention to him whatsoever. However, a glimmer of hope does shine brightly with the eighth track “Shipwreck.” This track features “angelic” vocals and a smooth melodic folk-rock sound that sounds like a ship in a storm at sea. This track is a peaceful tale about a man trapped on a ship at sea with a beautiful woman. The man’s heart is bursting with joy because he wants to spend the rest of his life with this beautiful woman.
Finally, the uncertainty of life is summed up nicely in the twelfth track “Water Levels.” This track features soulful vocals and an “airy” retro folk-rock sound. This track is a reflective tale about life churning just like the sea. Life can be unpredictable because it can be peaceful one minute and chaotic the next minute.
Paul Starling brings passion for the sea and a love of ”old school” melodies of the 1960’s to the mainstream with a cool modern nautical rock sound. This “breezy” twelve track masterpiece called “Shipwrecked Commotion” deserves 5/5 stars. It’s Excellent!
