Our local friend, GirlyBlogger has made a point that there have been quite a few “top ten” lists circulating in Atlanta with very few mentions of hip-hop. I thought we’d share her listof Atlanta’s top ten hip-hop “break-out” artists of 2011. (which include a few artists performing at the 2012 IMR Music Festival!) Thanks for sharing, GirlyBlogger!
10. Joya Bravo-I have only seen Joya Bravo once, but she is very talented and I like her songs. You may not know who she is but in 2012, you will. She plays violin and I think she has a great future.

9. Ethereal-I first saw Ethereal at the Hijacking Music Fest and was pretty impressed at his work. He is signed under Yelawolf imprint, “Slumerican”, and is doing big things in the indie scene. He mostly did a DJ set with a focus on electronic music; It was amazing.

8. Grand Prize Winners From Last Year- The funny thing about this band is you either love them or hate them. These guys have been touring and playing locally but I just so happen to catch them at the Little 5 Fest and they were cool. They kind of have a space funk electronic hip hop feel reminiscent of Dungeon Family, some people like it and some don’t but they are “to be looked at.”
7. Amul 9- They are an interesting band, but I can’t honestly say I am a big fan. Their songs are very political which is cool but their songs sometimes don’t really hit. The guitar player and lead singer have good stage presence but the reason they are on this list is because these guys have a loyal fan base that appreciate political music and they are making noise in the Atlanta scene.
6. Tragedy Called Truth-Probably one of the most high energy bands in Atlanta, with an afro-toting front man and a super hot emo-looking chick (yes, I like cute girls). TCT has been building a name and fan base with their high energy shows, talented songwriting, and amazing stage presence. I saw them at The Masquerade and thought they shut it down. These guys will break-out in 2012.
5. Jubee and the Morning After- These guys aren’t from Atlanta (from Macon), but I put them on this list because they are making huge noise in the Atlanta scene. I saw them at The Eastside Lounge and they are pretty bad ass. They have performed on the Jimmy Kimmel Show and have a very tight sound. These guys are going places, and I assume, to the top.

4. The FountNHead-These guys are the definition of afro-punk music. They are a four piece punk, electronic, hip hop band who destroys the stage every time they hit it. I have their EP and it’s amazing; Full of energy and fun. They are building a strong name for themselves. I like their future.
3. Arablak- I have to say I don’t know a lot about Arablak, I first saw him at The Hijacking Music Fest and I think he is my favorite rapper to see live that doesn’t have a band. He is kind of a young KRS-ONE. Arablak has a big underground following with people who are true hip-hop heads. I listen to him a lot at night time coming home from work. He is a student of hip hop and I think we should show him some love.
2. PlanetRAWK- It was hard to choose between 1 and 2, but I settled on the electronic hip hop 5-piece PlanetRAWK. These guys have within a year released 2 mixtapes, an EP, and a single;Tthat’s what I call “pushing it to the limit.” I have been hearing a little about them but I just got to see them live at the BeAtlanta house some nights ago with Verge of Bliss and they seriously were amazing. These guys have a lot to look forward to in 2012.

1. Detroit Mutant Radio- Without a doubt, DMR has to be the best local hip hop band in Atlanta, GA. Their stage-presence is contagious and full of energy. They have been playing around Atlanta for awhile and have been building a dedicated fan base who is eager to hear hip hop in a different light. They are super tight and front-man, Mr. Creech, does more than rap; He sings and screams, so it’s easy to separate them from the pack. My only beef is DMR has been doing relatively the same set for a very long time with maybe some covers here and there. They also released a single early this year, but other than that, they have been doing the same set. If you can get past that, then you will love them. DMR seems to be headed in a direction which a lot of these bands want to be heading. I don’t know if they want to be signed, but when it happens, it’s going to be great for this music scene.
