Battleships – In Retrospect (Single)

Sometimes, in life we have the privilege to listen to the first song of a band who may be famous someday. Here are the meaningful lyrics of such a song that (as a prediction) we will all hear on the radio, “In Retrospect” by Battleships.

You tried to warn me
It’s was over before it began
I said who is there who can tell me I’m not my own man
And guess it was true
Even though I did all that can

Battleships, from Sydney, are made up of band members Jordan Sturdee (vocals/guitar), Nato Hannaford (guitar), Jonathan Bowden (bass/keys) and Dan McMurray (drums).

According to the biography on their website, Battleships recorded, mixed and produced “In Retrospect” themselves in a 100-year-old hall, adding a touch of vintage flavor. Their vintage style can also be seen in their black and white YouTube video featuring them playing, Sturdee’s buttery voice, and a vintage lamp is the only light in the video.

Battleships as a whole would remind anyone of Keane and Jordan Sturdee’s high and smooth voice reminds me of Tom Chaplin, Keane’s lead singer. They both have very pure voices that resonate through the whole song. In the beginning, the music is quiet and is only a guitar as Sturdee starts to sing. Then music gets louder and the drums come in it sounds like an song that would have people coming back for more.

At the end of the song, the listener is left wanting another song. One is just not enough, so definitely look forward to what’s to come from Battleships.

Battleships definitely deserves 4 out of 5 stars! Can’t wait to hear what’s next!
