As the Crow Flies – House Of Mercury

The new experimental three song EP by As the Crow Flies is short – but can hardly be called sweet. With crunching guitars accompanied by the screeching vocals this is a band that possesses real skill in the art of metal making. Having only just formed this year, As The Crow Flies have quickly come together to form a solid band, with musicians that work well together and you can hear it throughout this EP.

‘Immortal Death Sign’ is the first track and begins with a simple, but catchy guitar riff accompanied by a heavier bass riff in a juxtaposition next to it which immediately gives the EP depth – but also means that immediately AtCF are being more experimental rather than just going down the ‘thrash’ route like a lot of bands.

‘House of Mercury’ is the next track on the EP and uses a lower pitched, slower more distorted riff but the real maker of this track, and perhaps the band, are the brilliantly soaring vocals which never falter and continually give the track more and more strength. The drums are solid throughout and really hold the band together, without trying to make themselves over complicated or being too simplistic that it doesn’t fit at all – like some bands do try.

‘Remains’ is the final song on the EP and is also probably the heaviest track, with the bass used to its full potential giving it a heavy, chunky sound which mean the guitar just has to layer over the top with a melody (and some solo which works really well because it isn’t too long and drawn out and immediately goes back to vocals) and of course the vocals just provide the icing to make this track a great song.

As the Crow Flies are a promising band – because of their more reflective, but big sound they have given themselves a capability and a uniqueness. Both of these things are being fulfilled because of the well structured tracks, solid musicians, great guitar solos and soaring vocals. With a little refinement, this could really develop into something special.
